To add to this, I recently read a review and an interview with Senator Ben Sasse on his book, Them: Why We Hate Each Other — and How to Heal. Sasse focuses on loneliness and isolation of individuals within communities that has been aggravated by social media. Social media like Facebook and Instagram actually atomizes us more as it connects us into larger depersonalized networks. Sasse poses the social psychological effects of loneliness as a turn toward political tribalism. That seems to resonate with the tone of political polarization we observe these days.
